The Sound Recorder in Windows 95
Posted on July 14, 2025
Windows 95's Sound Recorder was one of those tiny apps that punched way above its weight. Dropping in with the Windows 95 launch on August 24, 1995, it let you record, trim, and play back audio—simple, clean, no fluff. You had 60 seconds to work with by default, but if you knew the workaround (copy and paste loops), you could stretch it way longer. It supported WAV files only—no MP3s yet, that came later with third-party tools or Windows Media Player updates. Over the years, Sound Recorder stuck around through Windows 98, ME, and XP with barely any changes, becoming one of those low-key tools everyone used at least once—whether it was for prank recordings, startup sounds, or just messing with the mic.
