Back in the late ‘90s, Juno was the go-to free email service if you didn’t want to pay for an AOL or MSN account. Launched in 1996, it let you send and receive email over dial-up without a full internet connection—just the Juno software and that sweet modem sound. By 1998, Juno rolled out Juno Web for full internet access, and by 2001 they were in a three-way fight with AOL and NetZero before merging with NetZero to form United Online. No bells, no whistles, just email for free when everyone else wanted your credit card.
