Norton Desktop dropped in 1990 as Symantec’s answer to making Windows and DOS actually usable. Think of it like a productivity cheat code before we had real GUIs that didn’t suck. It gave users drag-and-drop file management, customizable toolbars, and desktop widgets—stuff Windows 3.0 wasn’t doing out of the box. Version 2.0 hit in ‘92 and cleaned things up for Windows 3.1, making it faster and less buggy. The DOS version was solid too, giving you a pseudo-GUI for command-line life. But once Windows 95 rolled in, with its own Start menu and taskbar, Norton Desktop got left behind. Still, if you were using a PC back then, this thing probably saved you hours—and a ton of frustration.
