Packard Bell Navigator was a proprietary alternative shell for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, introduced in 1993 to simplify computing for novices. Developed originally by Ark Interface (later acquired by Packard Bell), it presented applications as objects in a virtual home environment, similar in concept to Microsoft Bob and Apple’s At Ease. Navigator grouped programs into sections like “Microsoft DOS,” “Microsoft Windows,” “Service & Support,” and “Software,” with only the latter customizable by users. Unlike At Ease, it lacked multi-user accounts, offering only section-level password protection. Though designed primarily for Packard Bell PCs, it could run on other Windows systems, and a 3D version called Packard Bell 3D Navigator was released around 2000–2001.
