Bluelight .com’s website in 2000

Kmart’s Blue Light Specials were peak retail chaos in the best way—starting in 1965, a random blue siren would flash in the store and an employee would announce a surprise discount over the PA, sending shoppers sprinting down the aisles. By the late ’80s and ’90s, it was a full-on cultural thing—people literally went to Kmart hoping to catch that light. Fast forward to 2000, Kmart tried to bring the magic online with BlueLight.com, their early e-commerce site that even offered free dial-up internet to lure shoppers, but it fizzled by 2002 when the company hit bankruptcy. It was the original “flash sale” before apps and push notifications—just a cart, a crowd, and that siren telling you to move.
