IBM PS1 ROM GUI

The GUI built-in to the ROM of the IBM PS/1 computer in the early 90s

The IBM PS/1 dropped in 1990 as IBM’s big move to win back home PC users after the success of the PS/2 in business, but it was stripped down and aimed at simplicity—basically plug it in and go. The first models ran Intel 80286 processors with a super-basic ROM-based interface to launch DOS or starter apps, then quickly leveled up with 386SX and 486SX models through the early ‘90s. By the time the PS/1 line wrapped in 1994, it had evolved into a legit Windows 3.1 machine, but it never shook its “entry-level” label in a market that was already getting flooded with faster and cheaper clones. If you grew up hearing that soft IBM startup chime on a beige box, you know the vibe.
