Back in the early 2000s, AOL Radio was the go-to for streaming music before Spotify or Apple Music were even a thing. Launched in 2001 as a partnership with CBS Radio (then called Infinity Broadcasting), it gave users instant access to over 200 curated stations—rock, hip-hop, jazz, whatever you were into. It came built into the AOL software, so if you were online with that iconic dial-up tone, chances are you had AOL Radio running in the background. In 2007, they revamped it with a slicker web player and added more customization, letting users tweak stations to their liking. It was simple, free (ad-supported), and just worked. But by 2011, the service was phased out and replaced by Slacker Radio in AOL’s lineup. Still, for anyone who remembers AIM away messages and checking their “You’ve Got Mail,” AOL Radio was part of that golden-era internet vibe.
