Man I loved this game, but I always wondered why they immediately drove the van off the highway after this level. (TMNT arcade game, 1989).

Konami’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game dropped in 1989 and instantly became a quarter-eating machine in every pizza joint and arcade across the country. It was a four-player, side-scrolling beat ’em up that let you finally step into the shells of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael to smash through waves of Foot Clan ninjas, dodge Mousers, and take down bosses like Bebop, Rocksteady, and Shredder. The game was so popular it got a 1990 NES port (scaled back for two players) and an upgraded 1991 arcade sequel—Turtles in Time—that leveled up the graphics, moves, and time-traveling chaos. For anyone who grew up in that era, just hearing the opening theme or seeing that cabinet with the big green joysticks hits like pure nostalgia.
