Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game hit the NES in December 1990, bringing the quarter-munching arcade brawler to living rooms with one huge bonus: a brand-new snow-covered winter level you couldn’t play in the arcade. This stage drops the Turtles into a snowy park, sliding around while fighting Foot Soldiers and dodging snow plows, adding a twist to the classic side-scrolling action. After beating the boss at the end and destroying the floating, climate-controlling sphere, the spring season is restored to New York City. Konami basically used this level as a flex—extra content that made the home version feel fresh, and for kids in the ‘90s, discovering that surprise stage was like finding a secret level made just for you.
