The Nintendo Game Boy dropped in 1989 and straight-up changed handheld gaming forever. This little gray brick with the green screen didn’t have fancy graphics, but it didn’t need ā€˜em—it had Tetris. That game alone sold millions of units. Then came Game Boy Pocket in ā€˜96—same games, slimmer body. In ā€˜98, Nintendo leveled up with the Game Boy Color—finally, color graphics. It wasn’t flashy, but it was a workhorse. Durable, addictive, and crazy portable for the time. You could burn through batteries in a weekend and still beg for more. If you grew up with one in your backpack, you already know the deal—this was the console that turned ā€œportableā€ into a legit way to play.
