Back in 1991, Interplay dropped Mario Teaches Typing for DOS, and it was exactly what it sounds like—Nintendo’s mascot helping kids smash the keyboard instead of Goombas. You’d type letters and words to move Mario through levels, dodging Koopas and collecting coins, all while secretly leveling up your WPM. It got a sequel in 1996 with Mario Teaches Typing 2, which added cleaner graphics, voice clips, and more exercises to keep you grinding. For a lot of ‘90s kids, this was their first “edutainment” game—half typing lesson, half Super Mario fever dream—and if you grew up in a computer lab with beige PCs, you probably remember the MIDI music burned into your brain.
