King’s Quest III: To Heir Is Human dropped in 1986 and flipped the classic Sierra adventure formula on its head by putting you in the shoes of Gwydion, a kidnapped kid working as a servant for an evil wizard, instead of King Graham. Unlike the first two games, this one went hardcore with time-based events—you had to sneak around, learn spells from a forbidden book, and plan your escape before the wizard caught you and straight-up ended your game. Running on Sierra’s AGI engine, it pushed the series forward with more complex puzzles and a bigger emphasis on narrative, eventually getting a 1990 DOS remake with better graphics and sound. For anyone who grew up typing commands like “look under bed” or “open cabinet” while praying you didn’t die in five seconds, this game is the definition of mid-80s PC nostalgia.
