Norton Commander for DOS dropped in 1986 and instantly became the go-to file manager for anyone serious about getting stuff done on a PC. Forget clunky command lines—this thing gave you a slick, blue, dual-pane interface that let you move, copy, delete, and manage files with just a few keystrokes. Total game changer. It was fast, simple, and made you feel like a hacker even if you were just organizing your floppy disks. Version 2.0 hit in ‘88 with more stability, 4.0 in ‘92 added mouse support, and by 5.0 in ‘93, it was fully optimized for MS-DOS 6.22. It ruled the DOS world until Windows took over, but if you were around back then, you know—once you used Norton Commander, plain old DOS never felt the same again.
