Circuit City was the spot for electronics in the '80s and '90s—like, if you needed a new TV, VCR, or your first big stereo setup, this is where you went. It started in 1949 as a tiny TV store in Richmond, Virginia, but by the late '80s, it had exploded into a nationwide chain. They were early adopters of the big-box retail format, and for a while, they were crushing it. Remember the red plug logo? Iconic. But they started slipping in the early 2000s—slow to embrace online sales, fired their experienced salespeople to cut costs in 2007 (massive mistake), and just couldn't keep up with Best Buy and Amazon. By 2009, game over—bankruptcy. But for anyone who grew up walking those aisles, flipping through CD players or testing video game demos, Circuit City is locked in your brain forever.
